What happens if your SR-22 coverage lapses?

The state is told

If your policy is cancelled during the required period, the insurer notifies the state. In Virginia, the insurance company sends DMV a Notice of Cancellation or Termination, and DMV suspends or revokes your driving privilege until you provide a current SR-22 or FR-44.Source: dmv.virginia.gov, checked Oct 24, 2026

In Illinois, the insurer files an SR-26 cancellation notice and the Secretary of State suspends your license.Source: ilsos.gov, checked Oct 24, 2026

Getting reinstated again

In Texas, letting SR-22 coverage lapse re-suspends your license, and reinstating requires a new SR-22 and a $100 reinstatement fee.Source: dps.texas.gov, checked Oct 24, 2026
